Firstly, I want to remind DC members, and all members, of our next District Committee meeting, to which all members are invited. It is on Sunday 23 July, 2.45-5.40pm in the meeting room at the Great Western Hotel, Exeter (near Exeter St David’s station). I will send out an agenda nearer the date, but an important item will be the report on the current political situation by Liz Payne, our District Chair and Chair of the party. The times they are a-changing, as the song says, and we have a lot to discuss and to celebrate, as current developments, in my view, vindicate out party programme Britain’s Road to Socialism. We will also begin preparations for our District Congress, to be held on Sunday 19 November.
This year’s Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival is going to be a historic one, as Jeremy Corbyn will be speaking from the platform at the Sunday afternoon rally, for the first time as Labour Party Leader. I think we can safely expect a big turnout to greet him. As usual, we will have a party stall and there will be a Morning Star stall (both usually placed near the entrance to the main marquee). As usual, Bernadette Keaveney, the Morning Star’s Circulation Manager, will be there with a large number of free copies for us, and other helpers, to give out, sponsored by various trade unions.

I will have to miss the festival this year. The South African Communist Party has decided to honour the London Recruits with its Special Recognition Award and the other Recruits have nominated me to receive the award on behalf of them all. The ceremony will be at the SACP congress which is on 10-15 July. This is a great honour of course, but it means that I will have to miss Tolpuddle this year. My old friend Bob Newland, from YCL days, will accompany me.
